Primetime Emmy Awards 2020

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony aired live on September 20, 2020, broadcast in the United States by ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel serving as host for the third time. The event was produced by Done and Dusted and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production was hosted from the Staples Center rather than its originally planned venue, the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, with winners delivering speeches remotely from their homes or other locations.

During the ceremony, awards were presented across 23 categories to honor American prime time television programming from June 1, 2019, to May 31, 2020. Several program categories were moved to the Creative Arts ceremonies, including Directing for a Variety Series, Writing for a Variety Series, Variety Sketch Series, and Television Movie. Meanwhile, the presentation of the Governors Award to Tyler Perry and The Perry Foundation was moved from the Creative Arts Emmys to the main telecast.

Schitt's Creek won all seven comedy categories, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Eugene Levy, Outstanding Lead Actress for Catherine O'Hara, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Dan Levy, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Annie Murphy. Succession and Watchmen secured four awards each at the main ceremony, taking Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Limited Series respectively. Succession actor Jeremy Strong won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Watchmen collected acting honors for Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Zendaya won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria, and Julia Garner took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Ozark. Billy Crudup won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The Morning Show. Mark Ruffalo won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for I Know This Much Is True, and Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Mrs. America.
