Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe Awards were established by the Hollywood Foreign Correspondent Association, founded in 1943 by foreign journalists in Los Angeles. The 1st Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place on January 20, 1944, at the 20th Century-Fox studios. Subsequent ceremonies took place at venues such as the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, covering an eligibility period extending from January 1 through December 31.

In 1950, journalists formed the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood, which held festivals presenting Henrietta Awards to recipients including Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, Alan Ladd, and Susan Hayward. In 1952, the HFCA created the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry, presenting the first award to Cecil B. DeMille. The two groups held a joint ceremony in January 1954 and merged in 1955 under the Hollywood Foreign Press Association name.

The 13th Golden Globe Awards in February 1956 introduced the first Golden Globe in Television Achievement, followed in March 1962 by permanent categories for Best TV Series, Best TV Actor, and Best TV Actress. Starting in 1963, trophies were presented by individuals titled Miss Golden Globe, renamed Golden Globe Ambassador on January 5, 2018. In 2009, Society Awards redesigned the statuette, and the Carol Burnett Award debuted in 2019 as a television counterpart to the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Ceremonies were not televised in 1969–1972, 1979, and 2022, while the 2008 event was canceled during the Writers Guild of America strike. Following criticism and boycotts of the HFPA regarding its operations and membership diversity, interim CEO Todd Boehly announced a reform under Eldridge Industries. On June 12, 2023, Dick Clark Productions acquired the Golden Globes, and the philanthropic activities of the HFPA officially transitioned to the Golden Globe Foundation.
