Macaulay Culkin Clarifies Myths Surrounding the Creation of Home Alone

Macaulay Culkin is opening up about behind-the-scenes details of the iconic Home Alone movie, dispelling long-held speculations with a touch of humor.
Dispelling Improvisation Myths
During his recent interview on Hot Ones, Culkin clarified that the famous line, “You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?” was not improvised but was taken directly from the script.
“That particular line was scripted,” Culkin stated. “However, I did have some moments of improvisation, especially during Kevin’s store scenes.”
Behind the Scenes Insights
The actor shared that certain dialogues were indeed improvised, such as the exchange when Kevin is at the grocery store.
“For example, when Kevin questions why he can't talk to strangers, that was my own addition,” he explained.
Character Reveals and Casting Choices
Culkin also revealed that Buzz’s girlfriend was portrayed by a boy in makeup to maintain the character’s intended disgust without involving a young girl.
“The choice to use a boy for that role was a deliberate joke by director Chris Columbus,” he mentioned.
Additionally, the infamous Playboy magazine prop in Buzz’s room was meticulously altered to be both safe for a child and serve as a comedic element. Culkin added, “They essentially glued the pages together to make sure nothing fell apart.
Stunt Double Surprises
Contrary to popular belief, Culkin had a stunt double named Larry Nicholas, who was actually 30 years old, not the 13-year-old he appeared to be. This led to some amusing confusion on set.
“Watching Larry perform was something else. It was hard to believe he was only 13 based on his performance,” Culkin recalled.
Additional Production Secrets
Beyond his revelations, Culkin shared various anecdotes from the Home Alone set:
- John Hughes' Inspiration: The story was inspired by Hughes’ own fears about being away from his family.
- Holiday Viewing: Culkin mentioned he doesn’t watch the movie the same way others do, often changing the channel.
- Potential Reboots: He reacted humorously to the news of Home Sweet Home Alone.
- Andrew Heald's Misadventures: Director Columbus almost directed a different Christmas movie before landing Home Alone.
- Budget Hurdles: The film nearly didn’t get made due to budget disagreements, but ultimately became a blockbuster.
