McConaughey Discusses Son Levi Emulating His Career at 'The Lost Bus' Premiere

For Matthew McConaughey, the art of acting seamlessly intertwines with family bonds.
Reflecting on his 55 years in the industry, McConaughey shared his unique experience of co-starring with his 17-year-old son, Levi McConaughey, marking Levi's first foray into feature film acting. Joining them was his 93-year-old mother, Kay McConaughey, adding a heartfelt generational dynamic to their film, The Lost Bus, showcased at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
Levi's Unexpected Debut
“Watching him grow into his role beside me in some scenes has been incredible,” Matthew revealed exclusively to E! News' Francesca Amiker during their joint interview on September 5. “With three generations involved, it feels like a natural progression, especially since my mother has always been involved in performance. I was surprised to discover Levi's passion for acting.”
Initially uncertain about Levi's commitment to an acting career, the Interstellar veteran recalled how his son persistently sought opportunities to audition for the role of his onscreen son.
“Levi approached me multiple times asking, ‘Can I audition for this role?’ At first, I wasn't sure, but after seeing him read for the part, I realized he genuinely had the talent and presence required,” Matthew explained.
Ultimately, the decision was entrusted to director Paul Greengrass, who was impressed by Levi’s performance despite the initial anonymity.
“We decided to submit his audition without my last name attached, and Paul immediately recognized his potential,” McConaughey added.
Levi was understandably overwhelmed upon receiving the role in the intense wildfire-themed drama.
“I thought my audition went well, but I never expected to get the part,” Levi shared with E!. “When my dad handed me the call from Paul Greengrass inviting me to play Shaun in Santa Fe, I was in disbelief. I tried to stay composed, but I couldn't hold back the tears afterward.”
