This week’s #WomenCrushWednesday is @MomsDemand Local Community Engagement Lead and Senior Fellow of the @Everytown Survivor Network, Hana Mariah Hatta of Little Rock, Arkansas.Mariah transformed a harrowing experience with gun violence into a powerful force for advocacy. In 2008, Mariah was at work when a gunman shot and killed her boss. Mariah was the only other person in the room when this occurred. It wasn’t until Mariah attended a @MomsDemand meeting ten years later when she first considered herself a survivor of gun violence: “I hadn’t heard someone refer to me as one before then,” she recalled.Mariah then joined the @Everytown Survivor Network, a program that connects survivors to each other, amplifies the power of survivor voices, provides access to online mental health counseling, and supports survivors who choose to become advocates. The program welcomes anyone who has personally experienced gun violence—whether someone has witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened or wounded with a gun, or had someone they know and cared for wounded or killed.“They have helped me find my voice, tell my survivor story, and connect with others,” says Mariah. “It took until 2019 to receive a PTSD diagnosis. I want no one else to experience what it is to be a gun violence survivor. Now, I am a part of a massive network of fellow survivors and volunteers working together to make our country safer and to end gun violence.”Mariah’s impactful efforts serve as a testament to the transformative power of individuals who, despite adversity, strive to make our communities safer and foster a collective commitment to preventing further gun violence tragedies. If you or a loved one has been personally affected by gun violence, text SURVIVOR to 644-33 to learn more.

Today’s #WomenCrushWednesday is Christine Senteno of Washington, D.C.. Christine is a survivor of gun violence and a volunteer with @MomsDemand in Prince George’s County, Maryland. As a volunteer, Christine co-leads @MomsDemand’s Mi Gente Caucus: a national group of volunteers who focus on bringing the unique needs of the Latinx community to the organization’s efforts to reduce gun violence. The caucus acts as a bridge to reach out to those in the Latinx community affected by gun violence by providing @MomsDemand resources in Spanish and English, while also working to ensure the needs of the Latinx community are addressed in the gun safety movement. As its co-leader, Christine helps provide key feedback for increased translation services, engages Latinx voters on voting for Gun Sense Candidates, and trains other @MomsDemand volunteers on how to do similar work in their chapters.“Communities of color bear the brunt of inaction and the gun lobby’s ‘guns everywhere’ agenda,” explains Christine. “Easy access to firearms, mixed with weak gun laws and structural racism, has a direct impact on our community. The Mi Gente Caucus advocates for common-sense gun safety policies that keep guns out of the wrong hands, including those convicted of hate crimes and domestic violence, as well as investing in community intervention programs that work to end cycles of violence and provide a safer future to historically underfunded communities.”Thank you, @sentenodem, for your leadership and to the entire @MomsDemand Mi Gente Caucus for your extraordinary work in this movement. #wcw #LatinxHeritageMonth

As #LatinxHeritageMonth continues, I want to lift up another Latinx gun safety champion this #WomenCrushWednesday: Erica Taylor of Anchorage, Alaska. Erica is a Fellow with the @Everytown Survivor Network who created a gun violence prevention organization in memory of her daughter, Juanita Lolesio.Juanita was enjoying a night out celebrating on a party bus in December 2017 when two gunmen fired shots into the vehicle. Juanita was shot and for the next seventeen days fought for her life in the hospital. “We watched her go from no movement, to movement, to no movement,” Erica recalls. On January 15, 2018, Juanita was taken off life support; she was just 19-years-old.From that moment, Erica promised to make a change and not let her daughter’s name go unknown. She dedicated herself to combating gun violence by helping the young people in her community, and in the spirit of her daughter, who wanted to become a youth counselor, Erica founded @JuanitaStrongForeverProject: An Anchorage-based nonprofit dedicated to empower, uplift, and educate youth through mentorship, life coaching, and peer-to-peer support. “Some of us are not fortunate enough to have good role models in our life,” Erica explains, “so our mission is to reach as many youth as we can and to help make a difference.”Like so many fearless mothers in this movement, Erica transformed her heartbreak into heroism: “If I can just save one person, then I know I’m doing my job.” Please join me today in celebrating Erica and honoring Juanita by sharing this story. Together, we can end gun violence. #wcw

Ginny Mack is my #WomenCrushWednesday this week. Ginny is a Navy Nurse veteran, a nurse practitioner, and @MomsDemand and @BeSMARTforKids volunteer from Fort Collins, Colorado. After the attacks on September 11, Ginny served in the Navy for six years—including an O.E.F. deployment from 2003-2004—and used her G.I. Bill to earn her master’s degree focusing on psychiatric and mental health nursing. Working at a university clinic, Ginny came to a sobering realization: “I wasn’t expecting the most challenging of hardships to come after my active-duty service, but I found myself most affected by the young people I cared for who had lingering P.T.S.D. symptoms years after surviving gun violence.” Within a three-year period, two of her patients who were survivors of gun violence had died by gun suicide.Ginny channeled her grief into action and began volunteering with @MomsDemand and @BeSMARTforKids, where she developed partnerships with @AFSPColorado, @UCHealth Safe Kids Larimer County, @ASP_Larimer, @Imaginezerosuicide, and @fc_interfaithcouncil to promote gun safety and reduce gun suicide. She’s also coordinated presentations to healthcare providers in her community on Extreme Risk Protection Orders, or measures designed to help people in crisis, and the people around them, to stay safe from gun violence. Her local Fort Collins group was even honored with the sharing of a new proclamation from the city Mayor Jeni Arndt to recognize National Injury Prevention Day.As a Navy Nurse veteran from a military family, Ginny believes her experiences in life have well-prepared her to join this movement. “It’s essential to lean into the hard,” she says. “It’s imperative that we work together, one community at a time, and know that we have the tools to end this epidemic. We can do this together.” Thank you @ginny.mack7 for your service, and for your continued service to build a safer world for all of us. #wcw #SuicidePreventionAwarenessMonth

My #WomenCrushWednesday this week is @skaufman121 of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. After working for thirteen years as a teacher and school administrator, Susie turned her focus toward community organizing and activism and began volunteering with @MomsDemand. Today, she leads their Minnesota chapter and fights for gun safety throughout the state. As a volunteer, Susie helps to elect Gun Sense Candidates, or candidates who have committed to govern with gun safety top of mind. Her work was instrumental during the 2022 elections, in flipping the Minnesota State Senate–creating a gun sense majority in all three chambers of the state government. With this new majority, Susie, along with other partners and volunteers, began advocating for critical gun safety legislation, including closing a dangerous background check loophole, an Extreme Risk law to limit firearm access by individuals in crisis, expanding access to community violence intervention funding, and restricting the use of no knock search warrants. As a result of her efforts, combined with the collective efforts of survivors and gun safety advocates, Minnesota Governor and Vice President Harris’ running mate Tim Walz signed into law a public safety bill addressing every one of those life-saving measures. But Susie’s work didn’t stop there. This year, she led her fellow @MomsDemand volunteers to push for even more common sense gun safety legislation in the state, including a law banning binary triggers—a modification that allows a semi-automatic firearm to fire two rounds for each action of the trigger, doubling the firing capacity. Thanks again to her efforts, that measure also passed the Minnesota legislature and was signed into law by Governor Walz earlier this year. When asked about her tireless advocacy, Susie shares, “I work in this movement because I want my daughters to be safe when they go to school or hang out with their friends. I want them to know I did everything in my power to elect Gun Sense Candidates and to advocate for laws that will help make our country safer.”Thank you, Susie, for making our country safer. To help elect Gun Sense Candidates in your state, click the link in my bio. #wcw
